The National
Black Farmers Association began receiving calls from members in the
Mississippi / Louisiana area on Tuesday, August 30 asking what the
NBFA could do to help with the hurricane relief effort. One Mississippi
farmer described the situation of his family members who have been
transferred to the Astro Dome in Texas; they have no water, no restrooms,
and no sanitary items. The things that we take for granted are nonexistent
for these displaced Americans.
These heart-wrenching calls prompted John Boyd, the NBFA President,
to call on Corporate America as well as government officials to work
together with the NBFA in organizing a relief effort. Inspired by
the Tom Joyner Morning Show and BlackAmericaWeb.com's, Relief Fund
effort, John Boyd said Friday that the US Department of Agriculture,
the Office of the Governor in Louisiana and Food Lion have teamed
with the NBFA to organize a relief fund drive and food drive to help
the victims of Hurricane Katrina.
The details of the drop points for food and other specifics are being
hashed out and will be available as soon as possible. Donate directly
to the NBFA's relief effort below. |
